    Batalha holds a stunning 14th century Monastery. In 1980 the monastery became a Museum and 3 years later was named to be part of UNESCO's list of World Heritage. This is one of the most significant symbol´s of the Avis Dynasty built by the initiative of D. Joao I of Portugal in the sequence of a promise he made to Our Lady of Victory.     The Alcobaça Monastery (Portuguese is a MediaevalRoman Catholic monastery located. It was founded by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, in 1153, and maintained a close association with the Kings of Portugal throughout its history.
    The church and monastery were the first Gothic buildings in Portugal, , it was one of the most important of the mediaeval monasteries in Portugal. Due to its artistic and historical importance, it was listed by UNESCOas a World Heritage Site in 1989.
