Cristo Rei

The Episcopate conference, on 20 April 1940, decided the construction of the Cristo Rei (Christ the King) monument. The purpose was  a plea to God to release Portugal from entering in Second World War.

However,  the monument design, seems to have inspiration on  the statue of  Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), built in 1931 in Rio de Janeiro.

The interior of the monument has various spaces, that include: a library, a bar, two halls and the main chapel.

The pope Benedit XVI over flew the shrine in his apostolic visit to Portugal in bl-anjos_8641May 2010 and today the monument is an attraction for those who visit Lisbon.

The view experimented on top  of its 110 m height is simply astonishing, probably the best Lisbon . Perfect visitations at sunset time, when the blue and orange give the city an unforgettable colour mixture and picture. The visitation is  an optional in our Lisbon Tours or in The Evora and Palmela Tours.
