Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in western Europe. It was established as Phoenician and Greek trading posts, in the period of 800–600 BC. After that period it was successively been occupied by various peoples, including the Carthaginians, Romans, Suevi, Visigoths, and Moors.
The Romans occupied Olissipo (Lisbon) in 205 BC, after the war against the Carthaginians. With the collapse of the Roman Empire, waves of Germanic tribes invaded the peninsula. By 500 AD, the Visigothic Kingdom controlled most of the Hispania region. In 711, Islamic Moors, mostly Berbers and Arabs from the Maghreb, invaded the region and conquered the city in 714. It was only in 1147, after a four-month siege, that Christian crusaders under the command of Afonso I, captured definitely the city. In 1256, Afonso III moved the country´s capital from Coimbra to Lisbon, taking advantage of the city’s excellent port and its strategic position.
The city of Lisbon flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries as the center of a vast empire formed as the result of the Portuguese navigators discoveries. It was a time of intensive maritime exploration and prosperity. The Kingdom of Portugal accumulated great wealth and power. The portuguese empire founded colonies in Asia, South America, Africa and in the Atlantic islands.
Evidence of the city’s wealth, can still be seen today in the magnificent structures then built. The Jeronimos Monastery and the Belem Tower are some of those fantastic examples.
In the year of 1755 a big earthquake, in combination with subsequent fires and a tsunami, almost totally destroyed the city. The 1st Marquis of Pombal, took the lead in rebuilding the capital. He was the responsible for the creation of an elegant financial and commercial new town denominated the Baixa Pombalina.
